WHO WE ARE: The Dixie Geological Society is a group of professional geologists, retired geologists, teachers, students, rock collectors or other avocationalists, and anybody who is interested in the out-of-doors. Membership is $15/year ($5/year for students) but we are free if you want to attend occasional talks. Come check us out!
WHAT WE DO: We meet once a month, rain or shine, to hear talks (generally about an hour plus questions) or go on field trips in the general area of St. George-Cedar City-Kanab-Mesquite. Our programs appeal to the nonprofessional as well as the professional. Last year, under the Presidency of Steve Heath, Mathematics Professor at Southern Utah University, our talks included such topics as Young Faulting and Seismicity of the Hurricane Fault Zone, Uranium-Bearing Breccia Pipes of the Arizona Strip, and (from Director Rick Allis of the Utah Geological Survey) Utah Geology and the Energy Crisis. We attended field trips to the Virgin River Gorge, Parashant National Monument, Pipe Springs National Monument, and Cedar Breaks National Monument.
